WASHINGTON, D.C. – Brian Scarpelli, executive director of the Connected Health Initiative (CHI) responding to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT’s release of a final rule:

“The Connected Health Initiative welcomes ONC’s final rule and its commitment to building the certification program around FHIR-based APIs, which will better enable developers to deliver the open, standards-based interoperability that patients and clinicians need. We are especially pleased that ONC removed the prescriptive AI source attribute requirements, consistent with CHI’s view that transparency for health AI works best when it is scaled to risk and developed in partnership with stakeholders across the AI value chain.

More could be done to fully remove obstacles to health data sharing, however. We continue to urge ONC to finalize needed information blocking reforms, including by closing the exceptions that have been used to keep authorized third parties out, and we encourage HHS to actively enforce these rules so that a leaner certification program translates into real progress for patients. CHI looks forward to working with ONC to achieve a fully connected care continuum.”
